  • If treatment of an uncomplicated attack of malaria caused by these parasites is delayed
  • Second and third trimesters of pregnancy
  • Patients with HIV/AIDS
  • People who have undergone splenectomy

High-transmission areas

  • Young children
  • Visitors (of any age) from non-endemic areas

Transmission areas defined

  • High transmission: hyperendemic or holoendemic area where the prevalence is over 50% most of the year among children aged 2–9 years
  • Moderate transmission area: mesoendemic area where the prevalence is 11–50% during most of the year among children aged 2–9 years
  • Low transmission area: hypoendemic area where the prevalence is 10% or less during most of the year among children aged 2–9 years
